Mythbusting Residential Schools were well-intentioned
Переглядів 6532 місяці тому
Sean Carleton addresses the critical issue of residential school denialism, a form of misinformation that distorts the facts about the residential school system. Carleton explains that this denialism is not about denying the existence of residential schools, but rather about twisting the truth to undermine public confidence in efforts toward Truth and Reconciliation.

I just finished reading The Boy on the Wooden Box. It is a remarkable true story, and one that I will pass to my own children who are presently ages 12 and 16. This is what I will say to them: Everything you need to know about life - it’s possibilities; the full spectrum of potentialities; the arbitrary nature of circumstances; and the latent potential, in every second, to transcend. Everything you need to know about life and its value is right here, in this book. This is a real-life story that impacted this extraordinary man, who lived long enough and had enough encouraging voices around him to find HIS voice and to express HIS life and insight. It is all truly incredible, and absolutely undeniable. Thank you to Leon and his family for ensuring that these experiences remain so vivid.

Great video. Always remember to do removals at night, like this guy said. Hornets use the sun rays to keep warm so when the sun goes down, they will huddle for warmth inside the nest. That’s when you obliterate them with shock n awe.

That’s how my dad always taught me, but you arm wrestle with people who use their fist for distance between the forearm and the bicep and you can’t move beyond that point then you rely on your strength fully not your body weight. Then it gets difficult that’s how arm wrestling is supposed to be done. That’s why he said ( if I can get get away with it ) but yeah technically your supposed too use your muscle and strength not body weight. You’ll get the odd guy who doesn’t even know the difference but you get the odd person also who likes too measure it and make sure your relying on your arms strength not your body

Hey there, Your content is very nice and interesting. I like it very much. But one thing makes me feel very sad that you are regularly uploading videos with so much effort but your content does not have enough views, likes, comments. That is because your channel has several problems in your channel due to which the right audience is not coming to your channel. The only reason for the decrease in your channel is that the SEO of your channel's videos is not done. If SEO is done properly, then these problems will be solved. As a UA-cam expert if you want I can work for your channel for free for 2-3 days on a test basis. Then if you like my work you’ll hire me. Thanks.

Education was negotiated in the treaties by Indigenous leaders of the time. The fur trade was dying and they wanted their children educated so as to prosper in the "New World". Education for Indigenous people is a treaty right and Canada was fulfilling it's treaty obligations. Abuse unfortunately happened in ALL schools during that time period.

All of the points you attempt to make in order to undermine the Residential School Realists only show that FN and company are the true RS Deniers. You deny that there could be a parallel truth and don't want the whole Truth to be revealed. There are deniers and there are realists, realists listen to all sides good and bad, denialist only want their view to be heard and won't listen to any others.....please don't mix them up in order to promote your narrative.

"Rigorously proven" - I think elaborating on this would be helpful [as this video is actually saying these "talking points" are false]. I've seen Carleton's talks, I've not seen anything "rigorously proven". That's an abuse of terminology. Rigorously proven means something very different than likely Carleton is saying, academically speaking. This isn't proving a mathematical theorem or something, this is about a topic where the public deserves the best evidence available. Carleton, rather than engaging like an academic, often cowers behind talking points and smears "residential school denialists" by calling them names; that's not supporting good-quality academics. Giving concrete examples would have made a "mythbusting" video more helpful. I'm disappointed as alum of U of M to see it invest its time and money into creating these poor quality videos, as these aren't about academics [this video omits the actual academics] but instead is advancing confusing points that explain nothing more than "trust experts". The term [residential school denialism] itself is confusing and misleads people, as it definitely sounds like something else.

Concrete answers like what? Are the stories of survivors not considered concrete because oral history is not considered “concrete” in western society? The fact that there are people denying that anything bad came from residential schools when there is oral history and quite literally burn marks from my great uncle who was set on fire by a priest at Brandon residential school. I don’t understand where you’re coming from.

Don’t forget that the land you study on is Treaty 1, and you have a duty to educate yourself, so instead of being “disappointed” why don’t you stop in at the NCTR on UM Fort Gary campus and educate yourself instead of getting “disappointed” with academics. smh.

Talk about grossly misunderstanding the criticism, this isn't really the "line of attack" to dispute this point. "Debunking" is hardly what this is. It hardly addresses the criticism in a constructive way. Just pointing at treaties doesn't dispute it. The argument being made is that "equality of opportunity" [which is an essential idea many Canadians believe is a core idea in our country] should permit individuals to all get the same opportunities, not have collective privileges; the latter is the critique [which it is true, some people are getting things for free, that's still something worth acknowledging for no other reason than being born a particular way in Canada, and can't be denied], which this answer falls essentially into, without addressing the former [where the sentiment of the comment comes from]. Sinclair kind of missed half the conversation when he ignored this part of it [which is unsurprising, given U of Manitoba's lack of commitment to academic principles/standards and endorsing radical activist content over academics], hence my comment. This does not downplay any other kinds of concerns, but it should be noted that often the criticism comes from other people struggling, that can't have access to those same opportunities, for no other reason than the ancestry they were born into.
